In 1820, two hundred years after the establishment of the Plymouth Colony, Americans gathered at that site to celebrate its bicentennial. The speaker that day was the lawyer and statesman from New Hampshire, Daniel Webster. He said this:
”Let us not forget the religious character of our origin. Our fathers were brought here by their reverence for the Christian religion. They journeyed by its light and labored in its hope. They sought to incorporate its principles with the elementals of their society and to spread freely its influence through all their institutions, civil, political, and literary.
President George Washington wrote in his farewell speech to his friends and fellow citizens: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and Morality are indispensable supports.”
We are slowly but steadily becoming a Godless society. Now I realize, as Dylan so poetically put it, the times they are a changin’ and it’s not the 1700’s anymore. But our forefathers gave us a roadmap and for 232 years that roadmap has led us to become the greatest nation in the world. Do we and have we had our problems? Yes we have, but we worked through them as a nation and I believe, as did Washington, Hamilton, Madison, and the rest of the framers, In God We Trust. It’s more than just a motto, it’s our country’s foundation and part of our identity as Americans. People aren’t falling all over each other to get in to China or South America or any other country for that matter. They want to come here. They want to have a piece of what we as Americans have. Life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
In 2018 Louisiana Senate Bill 244 was signed into law by Governor John Bel Edwards. The bill requires every school to display the national motto, “In God We Trust” and educate students on its history. My hats off to the great state of Louisiana and its people and urge other states to follow their shinning example.
But there’s a movement in this country that wants to see us move in the opposite direction led by the Mainstream Media, Silicon Valley and the newest occupants of The White House. If left unchecked, they could succeed. The 2022 midterm elections will be our battleground.
The Reverend Billy Graham said shortly before he passed,
“I believe America has gone a long way down the wrong road. If we ever needed God’s help, it is now.” In God we trust.
